After battling the error

authdaemond: vmysql: sql error[3]: MySQL server has gone away

for days and reading this post and searching endlessly for other solutions I finally down graded to 41 and as always it just works!

DONT INSTALL THE TOASTER WITH VERSION 5x of mysql!

(revised by the spelling police. only to correct typos).

hmmm, I guess I'm just lucky for having missed this error.  Been running mysql 5.0.2.1 for many months now with coureri-authlib/authdaemond.

For purposes of documenting this problem, I'll mention here that I managed to inflict the 'MySQL server has gone away' situation on myself but in a different (and arguably stupid) way:

My MySQL server is on a different machine to my toaster - and I had unwisely chosen to build a more recent MySQL client into the toaster than the server. This was a misguided attempt to reduce the impact on the toaster of a possible upgrade to the back end database.

Advice: Ensure that the database client version is <= that of the server!
