duplicate and multiple message deliveries

All of a sudden in the last week my freebsd 5.3 toaster 4.08 is getting stalled after accepting a message for delivery, causing the client to timeout.  The message was actually finally accepted, because email I send is arriving multiple times.  The same thing is happening on inbound email, causing multiple copies of the same email.

I suspect spamassassin taking the excessive time.

Anyone have ideas of how to deal with this?
